Winterizing Your Irrigation Reel A Step-by-Step Shutdown Guide
Winterizing Your Irrigation Reel A Step-by-Step Shutdown Guide
End-of-season shutdown is one of the most skipped or rushed maintenance tasks in irrigation, and it's also one of the most expensive to get wrong. A reel that isn't properly drained and prepared for winter can suffer freeze damage to its pump, hoses, and internal components, damage that often doesn't show up until the following spring when the system is needed most and there's no time left to deal with a repair before planting or the growing season begins.
This guide walks through a complete winterization process for irrigation reels, step by step, to help protect your equipment through the off-season and avoid the kind of preventable damage that turns a routine shutdown task into a costly spring repair bill.
Why Winterization Matters More Than It Seems
Water expands when it freezes, and any water left standing in a pump housing, hose, or fitting over winter creates real risk of cracked components once temperatures drop below freezing. Unlike a slow mechanical wear issue that gives some warning before it becomes a problem, freeze damage can happen in a single hard freeze if a system wasn't properly drained, turning what should have been a routine off-season into an unexpected repair project right as the next growing season approaches.
Our article on irrigation planning and reducing downtime during peak growing seasons covers why unplanned downtime is so costly during active growing periods, and freeze damage from a skipped winterization is one of the most avoidable causes of exactly that kind of downtime, since the fix has to happen before the season even starts rather than during it.
Fully Drain the System
Draining is the single most important part of winterization, and it needs to be thorough rather than partial. Start by shutting off the water supply and running the pump briefly to clear the main line, then open all drain points, valves, and low points in the system to allow any remaining water to escape completely. Pay particular attention to sections of pipe or hose that dip or curve, since water can pool in these low spots even after the main line has been drained.
For systems using rigid pipe sections in addition to the hose reel itself, compressed air is sometimes used to blow out any remaining water that gravity draining alone won't fully clear, particularly in longer runs or sections with limited slope.
Winterize the Reel and Hose
The reel and hose assembly need their own specific attention beyond simply draining the water they carry. Retract the hose fully onto the reel following the manufacturer's recommended procedure, checking for any kinks or damage along the length of the hose as it's wound in. This is a good opportunity to inspect the hose for wear, cracking, or thin spots that might not be obvious during active use but become more visible once the hose is empty and being handled directly.
Our irrigation reel repair guide is a useful companion resource during this step, since any damage identified during winterization is far easier and less costly to address in the off-season than discovering it mid-season when the reel is needed for active irrigation.
Step 3: Winterize the Pump and Engine
Pump and engine components need protection specific to their mechanical systems, not just water drainage. For gas or diesel-powered units, adding fuel stabilizer before storage prevents fuel degradation over the winter months, which can cause starting problems and fuel system issues when the unit is brought back into service in spring. An oil change before storage is also worth doing, since contaminants in old oil can cause more damage sitting in an idle engine over winter than they would during active use.
For pump housings and any components where residual water can't be fully drained through gravity alone, non-toxic antifreeze appropriate for irrigation equipment may be needed to protect against any remaining moisture that couldn't be completely removed, particularly in colder climates where extended hard freezes are common.
Protect Controllers and Electronics
Modern irrigation systems often include electronic controllers that manage timing, pressure, and automation, and these components need their own consideration during winterization. Disconnecting power, protecting connections from moisture, and storing control panels in a dry, temperature-stable location where possible all help prevent corrosion and electrical issues that cold, damp winter conditions can cause over several months of inactivity.
Our complete guide to irrigation reels and controllers covers how these systems work together during the season, and that same integration matters during winterization, since a controller that fails due to winter moisture damage can leave an otherwise well-prepared reel system unable to operate properly once spring startup begins.
Inspect Before Storage, Not Just at Startup
Winterization is a natural opportunity to inspect the entire system for wear that might otherwise go unnoticed until it causes a failure during the next season. Check belts, fittings, seals, and any moving components on the reel mechanism itself for signs of wear that developed over the season. Addressing minor issues now, while the equipment is already being handled for shutdown, is far more efficient than waiting until spring startup reveals a problem right before the equipment is needed.
Our guide on how to maintain your irrigation equipment for long-lasting performance covers the broader maintenance routine this inspection fits into, and treating winterization as part of that ongoing maintenance discipline, rather than a separate, disconnected task, helps ensure nothing falls through the cracks between active seasons.
Step 6: Store Equipment Properly
Where and how equipment is stored through the off-season affects how well it holds up until spring. Covered, dry storage protects hoses, electronics, and metal components from the kind of prolonged moisture exposure that accelerates corrosion and material breakdown. For operations without access to fully enclosed storage, at minimum covering exposed components and elevating equipment off wet ground reduces unnecessary exposure during winter months.
Reels and pumps left exposed to the elements all winter, even when properly drained, still experience more wear from temperature swings, UV exposure, and moisture than equipment given proper covered storage, which is worth factoring into any facility planning for operations running multiple reels across a large-acre operation.
Replacing Worn Components Before Winter Storage
If inspection during winterization reveals parts that need replacing, whether seals, fittings, or hose sections, it's worth using genuine OEM parts rather than generic substitutes, particularly for components that will sit unused through winter and need to perform reliably the moment the system starts back up in spring. Our article on why OEM irrigation parts matter covers why fit and material quality make a real difference here, and it's especially relevant heading into an off-season where a component failure won't even be discovered until startup months later.
Common Winterization Mistakes to Avoid
A few recurring mistakes account for most of the freeze damage seen each spring. Draining only the obvious sections of a system while missing low points or dead-end fittings where water can still pool is one of the most common, since it only takes one overlooked section to cause a cracked fitting or split housing. Skipping fuel stabilizer on engine-driven units is another frequent oversight that leads to hard starting and fuel system cleaning come spring, an entirely avoidable delay during a time of year when every day matters for getting equipment back into service.
Rushing the process at the very end of the season, often because harvest or other end-of-year tasks are competing for the same limited time, is perhaps the most common root cause behind the others. Building winterization into the operational calendar as its own scheduled task, rather than squeezing it in as an afterthought once everything else is finished, goes a long way toward avoiding these mistakes altogether.
A Quick Note on Large-Acre Operations
For operations running multiple reels across large-acre farms, winterization becomes a bigger logistical undertaking that benefits from a documented checklist and clear scheduling, since staggering the process across several units rather than trying to winterize an entire fleet in a single rushed week reduces the chance of skipped steps. Our guide on irrigation reels for large-acre farms covers considerations specific to operating at this scale, and applying that same organized, systematic approach to winterization pays off in fewer surprises come spring.
Final Thoughts
A rushed or skipped winterization is one of the most avoidable causes of costly irrigation equipment failure, and the damage often doesn't reveal itself until the worst possible time, right when the system is needed for the next growing season. Taking the time to fully drain the system, protect the pump and controller, inspect for wear, and store equipment properly protects the investment made in irrigation equipment and helps make sure spring startup is a quick, uneventful process rather than an unplanned repair scramble.
